Girl: It must suck to be crazy.
Guy: Yeah, I work at the library, and sometimes we get weirdos watching porn.
Girl: No way, that's depressing!
Guy: Actually it's really funny.

“The greatest happiness is to scatter your enemy, to drive him before you, to see his cities reduced to ashes, to see those who love him shrouded in tears, and to gather into your bosom his wives and daughters.”

I've been reading about the Civil War a lot lately, and today I had a thought: This was a conflict that had been brewing more or less from the very beginning, ever since the Hamilton vs. Jefferson days. It's really a continuation of the same argument. The Union was centralized, industrial, freesoil, etc., while the Confederacy was decentralized, agrarian, and based on slavery. In fact, the Confederacy literally saw themselves as embodying Jefferson's ideals. (Their president was even named after him. XD)

I feel like Hamilton and Jefferson had lain down these two opposite visions of America, and they were incompatible, so these two separate societies developed that were in competition with each other until it escalated into a war. They had established these ideas, these models, and this was the time to field test them. One of them was going to win and one of them was going to lose.

And, of course, The Union won.

Why? Because The Confederacy was a society based on contradiction after contradiction. They wanted little to no government, yet they were forced to centralize in order to fight a war. They preached states rights and individual freedom, yet they were based on a rigid caste-system, Herrenvolk Democracy, and slave labor. And so their flimsy system inevitably collapsed.

The Jefferson model was field-tested, and it proved to be unstable.

So...

ALEX WAS RIGHT! The Civil War is a vindication of Hamilton.

Does anyone here know of English-German dictionaries (online or in print) with Math terms in it? I'm specifically looking for calculus related terms. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've been studying Modern Greek since the end of November in the little free time I've had, and after about a month of studying, I've come up with this very simple "short story:"

Any and all corrections would be greatly appreciated :)  ευχαριστώ!

Eurostar finally got their act together and offered to reimburse my "alternative transportation." Now all I have to do is hunt up my train/ferry tickets and mail 'em off.

Mailed off a few Christmas gifts today, then headed back to Second Story Books (gulp) for more Patrick O'Brian because [info]mmebahorel tipped me off that the middle books in the series are always harder to find. Walked out with Surgeon's Mate, Thirteen Gun Salute, Nutmeg of Consolation, Wine-Dark Sea, Hundred Days, and A Sea of Words--which was all they had in paperback. I managed not to walk out with anything else, always a difficult feat at Second Story.

Nothing special planned for tonight, except staying up to give 2009 a swift kick in the arse on the way out. It was a great year for me personally, but I'm pretty sure everyone else I know would like to strike it permanently from existence.

[info]waterfly89 finds out Pia Douwes is having a solo concert in Vienna. [info]waterfly89 first squees a little, then orders tickets immediately. She's already missed Pia twice (Elisabeth in Berlin 2008 and Chicago in London (with Linzi at that! ToT)) and she's not letting her get away this time.

Vienna, December 28
Cut for (too) much squee and adoration )

  • If you were to imagine Sherlock Holmes as directed by Guy Ritchie, you’d have this movie

  • (Oh wait, that’s what it was. What I mean is, it’s exactly what you’d expect, and in the best way possible.)

  • RDJ is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors

  • If I’d known more about the actual Sherlock Holmes stories, I might have enjoyed this movie even more than I did… but even with what little I did know coming into it, I still loved it

  • I don’t have anything to say except that I agree with all the other reviews: This movie is visually stunning, but the story is a ripoff of Pocahontas / Dances With Wolves / The Matrix and not particularly compelling

  • But really, the special effects were impressive enough to make me not care about the weak storyline

  • I didn’t like Amy Adams at all in this movie, which is surprising because she’s usually pretty likeable

  • All of the Julia Child stuff was entertaining and charming and everything, but the Julie stuff bored and annoyed me
